The rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar weakened in spot market trading, Wednesday (16/4/2025). Citing Bloomberg data, at 09.55 WIB, the rupiah was at Rp16,818 per US dollar or weakened by 0.11 percent compared to the previous close of Rp16,826.5 per US dollar. Money Market Observer Ariston Tjendra said the rupiah still has the potential to weaken due to sentiment on import tariffs from the US.

Moreover, the trade war between the US and China is still ongoing, making it a market concern. This condition has pushed the gold movement to penetrate an all-time high above 3,300 US dollars per troy ounce.

This shows high market interest in safe assets, so that the rupiah as one of the risky assets received a weakening sentiment.

The opportunity for weakening today is towards Rp16,900, with potential support in the range of Rp16,800, he told Kompas.com, Thursday. Meanwhile, referring to the Jisdor middle rate, the rupiah exchange rate on Thursday (4/17/2025) was at Rp16,845 per US dollar, or weakened compared to Wednesday (4/16/2025) which was at Rp16,815 per US dollar. Meanwhile, the exchange rate at major banks in Indonesia, such as BRI, the selling rate is set at Rp16,824 per US dollar. The selling rate means that the bank is selling US dollars at this position.
