The Rupiah closed weaker, the US Dollar rose to Rp16,305.
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The exchange rate of the rupiah is observed to weaken against the United States dollar (US) on the last trading day of this week. Citing Refinitiv, at the close of trading on Friday (July 25, 2025), the rupiah was at Rp16,310/US$.
In this week, the rupiah has weakened by 0.15%, marking three consecutive weeks of the rupiahs decline against the US dollar.Meanwhile, the US dollar index (DXY) as of 3:00 PM WIB has recorded a strengthening of 0.17% at the level of 97.53.
The weakening of the rupiah today occurs amidst global market sentiment that is still overshadowed by the strengthening of the US dollar index in yesterdays trading on Thursday (July 24, 2025). Although today, the strengthening of the US dollar is still limited because the market is closely monitoring the uncertainty of the Federal Reserves monetary policy direction. The issue of The Feds independence has resurfaced after US President Donald Trump clashed with Fed Chair Jerome Powell over the renovation spending of the central banks headquarters. Trump has reportedly continued to pressure The Fed to cut interest rates further as soon as possible.Domestically, Bank Indonesia also emphasizes that the room for interest rate cuts is still open until the end of 2025.The Head of the Monetary Economic Policy Department (DKEM) of BI, Firman Mochtar, stated that Indonesia inflation is expected to taper off below the target of 2.5 (within the range of 1.5-3.5), which opens the possibility for further cuts in the BI Rate. The rupiah is also considered quite stable with a tendency to strengthen.
Against this background, the domestic monetary easing space is still considered to be open. Bank Indonesia has cut the benchmark interest rate three times this year, specifically in January, May, and July, each by 25 basis points, and it now stands at 5.25. In the future, the exchange rate of the rupiah will still depend on the developments of The Feds monetary policy leading up to the FOMC meeting on July 29-30, 2025, or next week.
