JCI plunges 1.88% as oil prices surge, rupiah nears IDR 18,000
Total trading value across all markets reached IDR 12.79 trillion, involving 63.19 billion shares. Trading frequency stood at 1.95 million transactions.
Most sectors declined on Thursday, with the industrial sector posting the steepest drop at 2.86%. A total of 518 stocks fell, while only 187 gained and 121 were unchanged.
PT Fortune Indonesia Tbk (FORU) recorded the largest transaction value in the regular market, at IDR 865 billion. PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GOTO) followed with IDR 747 billion.
Analysts at Phintraco Sekuritas attributed Thursdays JCI decline to negative sentiment from a more than 4% surge in oil prices. The jump came after reports that President Donald Trump was planning to attack Iran before the US midterm elections.
Negative sentiment also came from various domestic issues. The rupiah weakened 0.08% to IDR 17,890 per US dollar Phintraco analysts said in a note to investors.
Technically, Phintraco analysts said the JCI had fallen back below its MA5 and MA10 levels, with selling volume increasing. The JCI is therefore expected to retest the critical level of 6,000, they added.
Across emerging markets in the Asia-Pacific region, all stock indexes declined. South Koreas KOSPI posted the steepest drop at 2.62%, followed by the Philippines’ PCOMP at 2.20% and the JCI at 1.88%.
In line with the trend, Asia-Pacific emerging market currencies also broadly weakened against the US dollar. Chinas yuan was the only currency to strengthen, even as the US Dollar Index (DXY) rose another 0.15%.
